The aim of my project (AHRC Collaborative doctoral award) is to re-evaluate the change of Scotland’s early stone castles, examined through archaeological survey and excavation, and documentary assessment. This broad investigation aims to draw together new evidence, revisit interpretation and challenge deeply-rooted assumptions about castles in this formative era in Scotland’s medieval history. It emphasises an integrated interpretation of Scotland’s castles, as buildings in landscapes incorporating cultural, social, economic, military and artistic strands of a unified identity. My thesis title is ‘Scotland’s Early Stone Castles, c.1050-1350’ (Supervisors:Prof Richard Oram (Stirling)and Dr Piers Dixon (RCAHMS)
