My project (Economic and Social Research Council +3 PhD studentship) entitled ‘Black Literacy and Slave Rebelliousness in the United States South, c. 1790-1810’ explores how reading and writing influenced and aided slave decision-making particularly escape attempts. Drawing heavily on slave runaway advertisements that featured in Maryland and Georgia, the project attempts to bridge the gap between the theoretical understanding of literacy and the social realities of slave action.
