My research entitled ‘Youth, Sexuality and Courtship in Scotland, 1945-80’ is ESRC funded and explores the formation of young people’s sexual ideas and identities and changing conceptions of social and sexual respectability in Scotland between 1945 and 1980. The thesis examines young people’s sexual experiences, attitudes and behaviours, and the factors that helped shape them, to construct a history of sexuality ‘from below’ through analysis of oral testimony, memoirs, and contemporary survey data. The degree to which ideas and behaviours regarding courting and sexual practice actually changed in Scotland during a period of alleged sexual revolution, and the factors that constrained and influenced such conduct, including gender, religion, and social environment are considered.
